Access to spawning and juvenile habitats for fish is now a permanent feature of European and national policy. However, in many cases, a water system can no longer do without water management objects. Due to climate change, subsidence and rising sea levels, more and more water management systems have to be put in place by the water managers, putting the naturally free fish migration routes under pressure and almost completely disappearing.
Research has shown that fish in Europe 'hit their noses' against an object or barrier on average every kilometre. This has contributed to the fact that fish (species) stocks have declined enormously and that there are even fish species that are threatened with extinction. This while the population growth is increasing and the improvement of the fish stock is of explicit social and ecological importance.
In practice, existing fish passages do not always deliver the desired results. They are often clogged with dirt, the passages are closed or open too far. Due to the fluctuation of the water level within the target levels, the traditional fish passages almost never have the right fish migration flow rate. On the other hand, the flow rate in the fish passage is very accurate; after all, a fish passage is an attempt to mimic a natural fish migration.
The Smart Fish Lift provides the solution to the current challanges in fish migration plus the added intelligence enables water quality control and expanding our knowledge of our underwater world.
Fish species differ in swimming power and speed. The water flow rate is henceforth of great importance for fish to be able to migrate. If the water flows too fast, migration is not possible for some fish species. Deviation from water levels and water flow within normal target levels and pollution in the fish passages contribute to varying water flow rates and therefore to the sometimes impossible migration of some fish species.
The Smart Fish Lift provides the solution for this. Our solution offers almost every fish the right migration conditions. Partly due to the automatic control and thus the adjustment of the water flow rate. Smart Vislift offers fish migration on the basis of water flow rate adjusted by artificial intelligence. This takes into account the different weather conditions, water quality, temperature and fish migration behaviour or migrating fish species.
The Smart Fish Lift is designed by ourselves. However, the components and water management systems that make up the Vislift are the work of proven parties known to the Water Boards: an innovation in fish migration, based on proven components.
Fish find their way through the reflection of impulses. When they receive these impulses, they feel locked up and threatened with them. Vislift has therefore developed a round fish passage in collaboration with water managers and ecologists. In this way, there is no hard reflection of impulses from the sides and they feel as if they are in a natural environment.
Once the fish have swum inside with the assistance of the variable flow rate, they end up in the interior resting area. This leads the fish through the interior, in the form of a clothoid helix, which leads the fish up a twisted staircase.

A fish passage developed according to the wishes of the water and water level manager. During the design sessions, water level managers very much wanted a fish passage that could be placed without damming the watercourse and preferably no sheet piling constructions.
Ecologists very much want a fish passage that can be placed without having to pump the watercourse dry so that no fish die from pumps, ecology and organisms can be lost.
Vislift has taken these wishes into account during the design process. The result is a prefab standardized Plug & Play fish passage designed to be placed anywhere in no time at all. This without drying watercourses and ensuring the water flow during the work.
The upstream swim tube can be drilled through a barrier, regardless of the type and material of the barrier. If possible, the outlet tube can even be dug around barriers. Due to the design and construction type, there is virtually no permit procedure for the water manager to go through, so projects can be arranged and executed quickly.
